Agra is one of the most historical city in India there are many historical monuments in this city. In the time of Mahabharata it refer as Agravana. Ptolemy was the first person who refer its name Agra. It linked with Mugal empire but other ruler also give some contribution to make famous of this city. Modern Agra was founded by Sikandar Lodhi (Lodhi dynasty; Delhi Sultanate) in the 16th century. Babar (founder of the Mughal dynasty) also stayed for sometime in Agra and introduced the concept of square Persian-styled gardens here. Fatehpur Sikri and Agra Fort was built by Akbar it was the capital of that time. Agra came to its own when Shahjahan ascended to the throne of Mughal Empire. He marked the zenith of Mughal architecture, when he built the Taj in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal and it become seven wonder of the world. In his later years of his life, Shahjahan shifted his capital to the new city of Shahjahanabad in Delhi from Agra and ruled from there. But after some time Aurangzeb the son of Shahjahan sent imprisoned him in 1658 in the Agra Fort. Aurangzeb shifted the capital back to Agra from Shahjahanabad in Delhi till his death. After the death of Aurangzeb, Mughal Empire could not touch that height and many small regional kingdoms emerged. After Mughals, Jats & Marathas ruled the Agra.
